Cheering for Armageddon: Evangelicals cheer after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announces that Israeli settlements on the West Bank no longer violate international law.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Monday the Trump administration’s latest pro-Israel change in U.S. policy, saying the State Department is rescinding a 1978 department legal opinion that viewed settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank as inconsistent with international law.
Noting that the decision is a “flagrant violation” of international law, The Guardian reports:
The US has declared that Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land are not necessarily illegal, in a dramatic break with decades of international law, US policy and the established position of most US allies.
However, while reasonable people are appalled at the Trump administration’s capricious and destructive rejection of established international law, conservative Christians are celebrating the news.
For example, in a statement distributed to reporters, Mike Evans, a member of Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Team, declared:
America has finally decided that the Bible is no longer illegal.
Evans continued:
In other words, by this move, the United States government is recognizing the Biblical prophecy of Judea and Samaria as part of Israel.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has reversed well-established foreign policy positions in the Middle East to the delight of conservative Christians. Last year conservative Christians claimed that Trump had fulfilled Biblical prophecy by moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.
In fact, many conservative Christians believe that Trump’s controversial decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will usher in Armageddon, and that moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem sets the stage for the Second Coming of Christ and End Times.
In short, moving the embassy to Jerusalem, and declaring that Israeli settlements on the West Bank no longer violate international law, serve to help satisfy the conservative Christian’s longing for the Second Coming of Christ, and the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.
