JANUARY 28, 2022 BY MATTHEW DISTEFANO

Christians will spend their lives worshipping Jesus, talking about Jesus, praising Jesus, giving their hearts to Jesus, but at the end of the day, they don’t want to go to hell.

They will give their hard-earned money to the Church with the belief that they will spend it on the poor, but at the end of the day, there is always an ulterior motive; they are trying to save people from hell.

Christians will talk about the love of Christ, the peace of the Holy Spirit, and the mercy of God, but at the end of the day, they will be the first to (wrongly) tell you how Jesus talked about hell more than anything.

For so many Christians, Jesus never stands on his own two feet. Jesus is not worth following unless there is salvation from hell. Ask any Universalist if they haven’t heard this question: “If all are saved, what’s the point of Jesus?”

Hell is a curse. It is a monstrous doctrine with catastrophic consequences. Hell keeps people trapped – trapped in fear and trepidation.

Hell maligns the character of God and diminishes the beauty of the human being.

At the end of the day, eternal hell cannot coexist with eternal Love.

And so, at the end of the day, if eternal hell exists, then God is not eternal Love.

If eternal hell exists, then either God does not love everyone or God is impotent in God’s ability to save everyone.

If eternal hell exists, then either God is a monster or God is powerless.

If eternal hell exists, then either God is a torturer or God is a wimp.

If eternal hell exists, then Love doesn’t win.

At the end of the day, I can’t believe this.

While many Christians can, I can’t. I won’t. I cannot conceive of a God who either can’t or won’t continue to love all of creation.

At the end of the day, love must win.
