Televangelist Pat Robertson suggests females reject Jesus Christ and become atheists as a result of rape or demonic possession.

On Monday Robertson offered his 700 Club viewers an explanation as to why a woman would refuse to accept Jesus Christ as her personal savior, and instead become an atheist: she must be possessed by demons or a survivor of rape.

Right Wing Watch reports a 700 Club viewer asked host Pat Robertson today if she should give up proselytizing to her atheist coworker and “let her perish,” Robertson speculated that the colleague might be possessed by demons or a survivor of rape:

“I don’t know if you’re dealing with something that is demonic or something that is deeply ingrained,” Robertson said. “It’s something beyond normal human experience, something has happened and she associates God — maybe she had an abusive father, somebody who raped her and then acted like he was preaching to her from the Bible, you just never know what is going on in somebody’s childhood.”

To his credit, Robertson did have the good sense to advise the viewer to “be understanding, be loving and don’t try to push anything on her …”

Robertson’s remarks concerning female atheists are at once both bizarre and sexist. Yet bizarre remarks are nothing new for the aging televangelist. Recently Robertson told his audience genocide is justified if it will prevent bestiality and other “sinful” behaviors. And while Robertson may be particularly concerned about besitality, he says it’s O.K. to marry your first cousin, as long as you try to avoid having “some mongoloid kid.”

On the positive side, Robertson does have the occasional moment of lucidity. Recently Robertson told his audience that Young Earth Creationism is a joke. The popular televangelist and Christian conservative denounced Young Earth Creationist leader Ken Ham on his television program, claiming Ham had made “a joke” of Christian conservatives during his recent debate with Bill Nye.
