Pastor John MacArthur is now comparing California Gov. Gavin Newsom to Hitler… because the governor is trying to save lives during the pandemic.
MacArthur has been in the news lately because of his constant refusals to stop holding massive indoor church services or even take the virus seriously. He’s celebrated the lack of social distancing and face masks in his congregation. A couple of weeks ago, he falsely claimed, “There is no pandemic.” And he continues to defy local regulations about indoor gatherings.
But yesterday, during an interview on The Eric Metaxas Show — Metaxas being the violent evangelical Christian who recently sucker punched a protester outside the White House — MacArthur went full Godwin.
… Hitler used false science. Hitler used false science about race as a people, about Black people and about Jewish people. He tried to basically use that false science to lock down the Reichstag in Nazi power. That is essentially what’s happening in California, and even across the country. The false science of this virus is being used again as a club by the governor of California and others across the country to affect the political change they want to see.
All of that is especially ironic coming from MacArthur, whose inability to comprehend basic data led him to declare the CDC was lying about the deadliness of the virus. He was wrong. He still hasn’t apologized or corrected himself because his ego won’t allow it.
Hitler’s use of false science allowed him to murder millions of people. Democrats’ use of the best available science is allowing them to save lives. There’s no comparison. MacArthur is just going to extremes because he has no actual defense. He’s a death cult leader who doesn’t realize it.
Other pastors who don’t suffer from MacArthur’s martyr complex have found ways to keep church going over the internet without putting their congregations in danger. This isn’t about Democrats trying to persecute Christians; most Democrats in power are Christians. This is about Christians refusing to do the bare minimum during a global emergency because of lies they tell themselves. MacArthur claims no one in his congregation has gotten COVID. But he doesn’t test them. There’s no indication that the church is prepared to do any contact tracing. And if you’re the sort of person who would go to his church, you’re probably not the sort of person who would publicly announce a COVID diagnosis. Plus, as we’ve seen from a deadly wedding in Maine, the concern isn’t just that people are exposed to the virus; it’s that they’ll be asymptomatic and spread it to others who don’t have the ability to fight it.
MacArthur is an arrogant pastor who will inevitably hurt people. Metaxas is an arrogant Christian who is eager to help him. And apparently no one they’re close to has the courage or authority to tell them to stop.
