Black Lives Matter: NASCAR has announced they are banning the Confederate flag at all events and properties.
NBC News reports:
NASCAR announced on Wednesday it would ban Confederate flags from its events, two days after the only black driver in the league’s top series called on NASCAR to make the change.
The flag will no longer be allowed at races or displayed at any NASCAR properties, the league said in a statement posted to its Twitter account.
Announcing their decision to ban the Confederate flag, NASCAR released the following statement Wednesday:
The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the Confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.
Earlier this week Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only black full-time driver, called for a ban of Confederate flags at racetracks. Wallace told CNN on Monday:
No one should feel uncomfortable when they come to a NASCAR race. So it starts with Confederate flags. Get them out of here. They have no place for them.
There’s going to be a lot of angry people that carry those flags proudly, but it’s time for change.
Wallace will be driving a car with a Black Lives Matter paint scheme to promote racial equality Wednesday night.
